Spring 2023 Update - Life at the Ranch!

As the apple trees begin to blossom and the spring peepers start singing their nightly songs, we wanted to share some exciting news from Second Breakfast Ranch!

First and foremost, we are thrilled to welcome a new ranch hand (and third kiddo) Theodore to the Second Breakfast family! He and Christy are doing great, and ranch hands Pip and Declan are thrilled to have a new sibling.

We have also recently brought on some new piggies to the farm, who are currently being trained on portable electric netting. Once the weather warms up, they will be ready to roam and explore the wooded and pastured area at the back of our property, where all of the beautiful shagbark hickory trees will drop their nuts later this year for them to enjoy. This is just one of the reasons why our pork is something special!

Our grass-fed cattle are doing excellent and have weathered the winter quite well. They have begun to shed their winter coats and have started their Spring rotations at the ranch. The cattle have been attracting a lot of local wild birds, which have been excellent for pest control. It’s great to see the symbiotic relationships at work!

The “flock” is also doing great, and we have been free-ranging our ducks and chickens during the day. We are able to keep them rotating, even while free-ranging, by strategically placing a kiddie pool where we want them to congregate. This helps us manage the land and make sure they aren’t putting too much pressure on areas we don’t want them to be.

At Second Breakfast Ranch, we are always keeping busy. We have installed new garden beds, begun seed starts for our gardens, been involved in field trips (both virtual and live), mended fences between Indiana storms, and looked for ways to improve our homestead.

Thank you to our customers!

We hope you enjoy hearing about all of the exciting happenings on the farm, and we can't wait to continue providing you with our sustainably raised, high-quality products!
